Rosemary Cafe is a famous hangout in downtown Guilin. The picture on the wall says it all - Bill Clinton with the owner/manager, Green, back in 1998.
The clientele
The regular customers in Rosemary Cafe are mostly expats teaching English at schools in Guilin. They are a friendly bunch and not averse to conversation so long as this does not become one-sided; either them answering a barrage of questions or having to listen to a rant.
The cafe is also popular with locals and domestic tourists looking to meet foreigners. That's a great chance to make new friends, especially if you plan on being around for a while.
The food
Most of the food is western; the rest is westernized Asia food. That is exactly what the clientele want, and this is amongst the best western food in China - especially for the budget traveller. Portions are adequate rather than big but you can easily afford to have a main course and dessert.
The range of Mexican food is a real surprise for China and there are some hidden treats. If you love fish but can't stand the bones then go for the fish fillet sandwich - a prayer answered.
